Three dimensional wood sculptures are referred to as “carving in the round”. Instead of carving a design into a wood surface, a block of wood is used and the excess wood is cut away to leave only the finished work. My experience carving in the round has been limited to only a few pieces over the years. However, it is a form of art I want to explore more. Below are my first attempts. A project planned for 2009 is to carve a head bust of each of the people in the Hero’s Gallery.
